Dhanekhali cotton sarees come from the village of Dhaniakhali . This small village located in West Bengal is known for the traditional handloom sarees.The master weavers of Dhaniakhali use the Jacquard weaving technique and you will be mesmerized by the variety of the designs of these sarees ranging from the simple elegant horizontal stripes to intricate fish and conch shell motifs(Naksha).
 Lightweight and dreamlike in its constitution, the sari prides itself on bearing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The origins of the sari can roughly be traced back to 1935, when Dhaniakhali was on its way to becoming a fertile ground of handloom textiles, of which the most prominent was â and still is â the eponymous sari, as well as Bangla tant weaves.
Traditionally, the sari is crafted from pure cotton with a yarn count of 100S (in both the warp and weft portions), which explains its paper-thin texture.In times, the border was broadened to 6 inches and more and adorned with a variety of stripes in tassar, muga or zari etc. (presently dyed cotton yarn is used). These broad borders known as âmaatha paarâ or âBeluaari paarâ were often in two colours- such as black and red with a compact weave thus making it very strong.
The conventional colour palette involved in the weaving of the sari speaks of greys, whites, and blacks; however, adapting to changing times, weavers have now started to incorporate bright yellows, pinks, reds, and greensâamong many other shadesâto lend the sari vibrancy. The yarn used for the weaving of the sari is usually dyed with natural components, a process that first travelled to Dhaniakhali back in 1942.
One of the best ways to identify one easily is to find the vertically running woven braided line near the anchal or pallu (that you will definitely find in ours :) )
